On Repeat: Knife Party & Kwabs

On Repeat is a fun little series where I’m going to post about songs I’m currently obsessed with. Today we have 2 very different tracks.

First up we have a new track from Australian electro-house duo Knife Party, called “Boss Mode.”

Over the course of just under 4 minutes, “Boss Mode” manages to take you to a whole range of places, and I mean this in the best way possible. It starts off on a dark, industrial vibe that makes you feel like you’re in a horror movie. Around the 1:15 mark it has a really amazing and unique drop that I’ve come to learn is sort of a hallmark of Knife Party’s music. If you’re like me, you listen to this song mostly while sitting at your desk at work, and, too bad for you, proper work behavior says you can’t get up and dance (get up and get down, if you will). You will have to be content with some head nods.

“Boss Mode” eventually evolves into a trap song, complete with gunshots. I love a good trap track (say “trap track” 10 times fast!) and this song, despite being incredibly dark, makes me so unbelievably happy. Check it out:

Next up we have…a Katy Perry cover? Yup. We do.

I love pop music but I’m not typically into Katy Perry, and I’ve definitely never been a fan of her song, “Dark Horse,” which played on the radio every single morning for about 6 months when I woke up for work (yes, I still use an alarm clock, and not my phone, to wake up in the morning).

I heard this “Dark Horse” cover by British artist Kwabs for the first time today, and I can’t get over it. It’s beautiful and soulful and a really great interpretation of what I’ve always considered to be kind of a creepy song. I had never heard of Kwabs before today and I’m definitely going to be checking out his original work.
